A new report from the Arts Management Support Center shows encouraging changes in South Korea’s live performance scene: while musicals and pop concerts still dominate ticket sales, audience distribution is broadening beyond a few top shows and the Seoul area. In Q3 2025 the top 20 ticket sellers were mostly pop (12) and musicals (7), but the share held by the top 10 shows fell to 25.2%—the lowest in three years—suggesting growth in the “middle tier” of performances. Experts attribute this to two factors: rising prices for top-tier shows pushing some audiences toward mid-priced, proven mid-scale productions, and diversified post-pandemic viewing habits favoring “value-driven” choices. Regional concentration has also eased: although 65% of top-20 performances were in the Seoul metropolitan area, non-capital cities like Busan (4), Daegu (1), Gwangju (1) and Daejeon (1) increased their presence. Industry sources credit improved regional infrastructure and the touring of established (“licensed”) hits for creating a virtuous cycle—successful tours build local trust, supporting future shows—and hope this will eventually lead to more locally produced hits rising to the top.
