Tanztheater pioneer Pina Bausch’s iconic Nelken (Carnations) returns to Seoul’s LG Arts Center (Magok) from June 6–9, presenting a striking stage covered with some 9,000 carnations. The 1982 work exemplifies Bausch’s ‘no-boundary’ approach—merging dance and theatre, reality and stage—to explore power, violence, social control and human dignity. Dancers move on a flower-strewn set with gestures ranging from playful to oppressed; figures in shoes and police uniforms symbolize order and authority, creating an ironic coexistence of beauty and brutality. The production reunites veteran performers with younger dancers under rehearsal director Edward Paul Martinez, aiming to transmit Bausch’s legacy across generations. Nelken then moves to Sejong Center on June 14–15—the first time a Bausch piece will tour beyond Seoul in Korea. (Tanztheater: a form combining dance and theatre)
