Artist Kim Jeong-suk opens her 5th solo show "Hearing Silla" at iM Gallery from the 11th to 17th, presenting calligraphic interpretations of 14 hyangga (ancient Silla songs). Using bold brushwork, variations of Korean script—block (goche) and cursive (heullim)—and contemporary ink aesthetics, she balances expressive strokes with the clear spirit of the poems. A monumental piece, Cheoyongga (처용가), uses dramatic ink splashes (tamuk, 打墨) to convey the hero’s rage, resignation and magnanimity. The exhibition also includes Jemangmaega and other works, arguing that writing, poetry and song are inseparable. An opening performance of hyangga singing by Baekgang Heo Hwa-yeol is scheduled on the 11th at 2 PM. Kim trained in calligraphy and cultural heritage studies and holds prominent roles in Korean calligraphy associations.
