Pyeon Jang-wan Appointed New President of Korea National University of Arts: Art Education Is About Courage to QuestionCreatrip Team
a month ago
Pyeon Jang-wan was inaugurated on Nov. 4 as the 10th president of Korea National University of Arts (K'Arts). In his speech he said the core of art education is to cultivate the courage to ask questions and that, despite technological advances, art centers on humans. He described K'Arts as a community of six academies that sing the world in different languages, where diversity and harmony are the school's greatest strengths, and said art teaches new ways of seeing the world rather than serving simply as a tool to change it. The ceremony at the Seokgwan campus arts theater included a congratulatory dance performance by the university's dance school (무용원) and remarks from film director Kim Seong-su. Pyeon, educated in English literature at Chung-Ang University and film theory at NYU, joined K'Arts in 1995 and has served in several leadership roles; his four-year term runs to Oct. 1, 2029.
