South Korean Airlines Expand Routes to Japanese Small Cities Amid Travel Boom

Due to a continuing boom in travel to Japan, South Korean airlines are focusing on securing routes to smaller Japanese cities instead of larger, oversaturated ones. Jin Air announced a new route from Incheon to Ishigakijima, Okinawa, marking the first time a South Korean airline flies to this destination. This is part of a trend since airlines like Korean Air and Asiana have resumed routes to other small Japanese cities. The declining value of the yen (yen depreciation: 엔저) has prompted travelers who have already experienced large cities like Tokyo and Fukuoka to seek out new destinations. The increased demand for small cities, along with a drop in profitability for large city routes, makes these lesser-known destinations attractive. The expectation of sustained interest in Japanese travel is pushing airlines to compete for these new routes.
