Samyang Foods surprised the public by unveiling a premium instant noodle called "Samyang1963," returning to use beef tallow (uji; clarified beef fat) for frying noodles — a controversial ingredient tied to a 1989 scandal. At a Seoul launch on November 3, company vice chairman Kim Jung-su appeared unexpectedly, framed the release as a symbolic rebirth and handed out court documents confirming the company’s past exoneration. The product pays homage to Samyang’s 1963 roots and uses a blend of animal beef tallow and plant-based palm oil, freeze-dried flavor flakes, and liquid soup base to recreate 1960s taste with modern refinement. Targeting young adults (20–30s) and nostalgic consumers aged 50+, Samyang positions the noodle as a premium K-food flagship for both domestic sales and future exports. The event also featured an AI-restored image of founder Jeon Jung-yoon delivering the company philosophy “siksokpyeongcheon (食足平天; 'If people are fed, the world is peaceful'),” underlining heritage and trust-building after decades-old controversy.
