Samyang Revives 1963 Premium Ramen with Golden-Blend Beef Tallow OilCreatrip Team
a month ago
Samyang Foods unveiled 'Samyang 1963,' a premium reinterpretation of its original ramen, at a launch event in Myeongdong. The product revives the brand’s historic use of beef tallow (우지) by blending animal and palm oils into a 'golden-blend' frying oil to enhance aroma and umami. The launch marks a symbolic return after the 1989 'beef tallow scandal' (우지 파동) that halted production and damaged consumer trust. Company leaders emphasized heritage, sincerity, and quality—sourcing larger vegetable flakes and a richer broth with beef-bone stock and spicy notes—positioning the product at a premium price similar to competitors and aiming first at the domestic market before expanding exports. The move follows Samyang’s global success with the spicy 'Buldak' series and seeks to reinforce the brand’s roots and “honest taste.”
