Men Prefer Crisp Makgeolli, Women Lean Sweet and SmoothCreatrip Team
a month ago
Bae Sang-myeon Joo-ga analyzed sales data for its ‘Slow Village’ makgeolli (Korean rice wine) from Oct 2024 to Sept 2025 and found clear taste differences by gender and age. Men most often chose the 'Autumn' makgeolli (12–18 days aged), noted for strong effervescence and a drier profile, while women favored the 'Spring' (1–6 days) and 'Summer' (7–11 days) varieties, which are sweeter and have a softer throat-feel. Younger consumers—especially those in their 20s—showed a strong preference for the sweet early-aging ‘Spring’ version, whereas older buyers tended to prefer later-stage, drier varieties. The company labels bottles with QR codes to show exact aging dates so customers can pick seasonal flavors based on maturation.
