The 2025 Wonju Samto Festival, Wonju City's flagship rural culture and tourism event, runs Nov 8–11 at the Wonju Dancing Performance Hall. This year it coincides with the 30th National Farmers' Day state ceremony held in Wonju, marking the city's historical role as the origin of the holiday. The festival, organized by the Rural Leaders Association of Wonju, draws on the local 'Samto' (三土思想, an idea meaning humans are born from, live on, and return to the soil) theme and carries the motto “Roots of agriculture! Towards a 100-year future.” Highlights include regional unity events like a nationwide communal cauldron bibimbap (gamasot bibimbap) sharing, a 1,111 m colored rice cake (garaetteok) pulling to mark 11/11, national youth folk-singing contests, and a domestic produce cooking competition. Evening performances feature K-rock band Guckkasten and soloist Yoo Tae-pyung, trot and musical gala shows, traditional gugak (Korean classical music) performances, a Samto song contest, and concerts with the Army 36th Division band. Exhibition halls will showcase Wonju agriculture, Gangwon produce, farmers’ research groups, and agricultural machinery. Wonju’s mayor said the city will support the festival’s growth into a national event celebrating farmers and consumers together.
