'Fantastic Ordinary' Special Exhibition at Gyeongju for APEC CEO SummitCreatrip Team
a month ago
A special exhibition titled "Fantastic Ordinary" is on view at Place C in Gyeongju until November 9, organized by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and curated by Sum Project to mark the APEC CEO Summit. The show features works by 10 leading Korean contemporary artists including Kim Soo-ja, Kim Jong-hak, Lee Bae, Ha Chong-hyun and others, presenting explorations of everyday life, memory and materiality that bridge tradition and contemporary practice. The exhibition narrative begins with a late Joseon painting by Imdang Baek Eun-bae and expands into contemporary responses that blur boundaries between art and daily life. Highlights include Kim Soo-ja’s "bundle" series and light façade installation suggesting movement and coexistence; Ha Chong-hyun’s "paint-squeezing" (baeapbeop) canvases visualizing material resistance and mental cohesion; Lee Bae’s charcoal sculptures on disappearance and cycle; Lee Soo-kyung’s "Translated Vase" ceramics addressing wound and healing; and Ham Kyung-ah’s collaboration with North Korean embroidery artisans weaving emotional fissures of division. Photography, lacquerware, gelatin silver prints, and AI-assisted image works are also shown. Curator Lee Ji-yoon says the exhibition aims not simply to represent a "Korean identity" but to present contemporary Korean artists’ universal languages in a historic APEC context. Special edition works created for the summit—limited prints, small teacup-and-stand sets, editioned ceramics and furniture—are available as part of the show.
