Fly Larvae (maggot) Infection from Wet Laundry: Skin-Invading 'Furuncular Myiasis' Cases ReportedCreatrip Team
a month ago
Researchers report cases of cutaneous myiasis (피내 구더기증) caused by fly larvae (maggots) attaching to wet clothes left to dry. Lund fly larvae, which parasitize many mammals including primates, can invade human skin through pores, wounds, or orifices and grow inside tissues, causing swelling, pain, inflammation and even tissue necrosis; in severe or immunocompromised cases it can lead to systemic infection or sepsis. A Wisconsin veterinarian discovered a Lund fly larva under his armpit after visiting Uganda’s Kibale National Park and suspects eggs attached to damp laundry were the source. Prevention tips include ironing clothes (열을 가하다) and bedding before use, covering exposed skin while traveling in tropical/subtropical regions, avoiding insect bites, properly disinfecting wounds, and seeking medical care rather than squeezing suspicious lesions. Treatment typically involves surgical removal of the larvae and antibiotics to prevent secondary bacterial infection.
