Questioning 'Seeing' in a Visual-Centered World: Theatre 'Last Hope'Creatrip Team
a month ago
Chilean ensemble Colectivo Cuerpo Sur brings Last Hope to Seoul’s Modoo Art Theater (모두예술극장) from Nov 14–16. The piece, created last year, pairs company member Evana Garín with Hilda Snippe, a Dutch amateur actor with only 1% vision, to explore how people experience the world when sight is limited. The performance stages Snippe’s long-held wish to travel the Andean snowfields as a richly tactile, multi-sensory journey; dialogue and physical staging shift the focus from “seeing places” to “feeling spaces.” By challenging visual-centrism—the tendency of modern societies to prioritize vision above other senses—the play invites audiences to recognize sensory multiplicity and embodied layers of memory, and expands notions of perception through non-normative perspectives. Modoo Art Theater, reopened in 2023 as Korea’s first standard venue for disability arts, hosted this international collaboration born from meetings with an accessibility working group in Leeuwarden, Netherlands.
