Jindo Cultural Center Launches Quarterly on Local Folk TraditionsCreatrip Team
a month ago
The Jindo Cultural City Center launched the first issue of its quarterly magazine "Jindomin, Sok-euro" on October 30, focusing on Jindo’s folk culture. The premiere issue spotlights the Jindo ssitgimgut (진도씻김굿), a 1980-designated National Intangible Cultural Heritage ritual that cleanses wandering spirits at the boundary of life and death and serves as a communal cathartic ceremony. The ritual’s hallmark is the release and relief of deep sorrow through intense song and dance by shamans, leading mourners to experience collective liberation. The issue also highlights ritual instruments such as the jeongju (a brass bowl struck with a horn) and features archival material and interviews with lineage bearers and contemporary practitioners who continue the tradition, including descendants of famed master Park Byeong-cheon and current performers and instructors. The free magazine is archived online at the Jindo Cultural City Center website (jindoccc.kr).
