Children’s Songs by Anti-Japanese Composer Park Tae-hyun Become Opera ‘Song of the Wind’Creatrip Team
a month ago
The creative opera 'Song of the Wind' will premiere at Seongnam Arts Center on November 14–15. Inspired by anti-Japanese era composer Park Tae-hyun (1907–1993), the piece uses or reimagines his children’s songs such as 'Mountain Wind, River Wind' and 'Lullaby' to tell a life-affirming story set in a Korean village during the 1950s Korean War. The tale follows a girl named Gang Baram and her doll 'Dal' as they find refuge in imagination, nature and song. The production team—including writer Hwang Jung-eun, composer Kim Joo-won and director Jo Eun-bi—and performers soprano Hong Hye-ran and tenor Choi Won-hwi highlighted blending the simple, clear melodies of Park’s songs with operatic artistry to protect childhood innocence and move audiences across generations. Seongnam Cultural Foundation hopes the work will celebrate local cultural heritage and mark a step toward a 'digital children’s-song and story city' initiative.
