Do You Need to Rinse Dishes Before the Dishwasher? Experts Say Usually No

Experts and appliance makers now say pre-rinsing dishes before loading the dishwasher is usually unnecessary. Modern dishwashers (and detergent enzymes) work better when a small amount of food residue remains: sensors detect soil level and adjust wash strength, and enzyme-based detergents activate by reacting with crumbs. However, exceptions exist—very old machines, hard dried-on food (like overnight rice, peanut butter, avocado, or thick soups), or leaving dirty dishes sitting can still require a quick rinse or soak. To skip rinsing successfully, clean the filter regularly (about twice a month), choose stronger cycles for heavy soils, load dishes so water can circulate, and check for missed spots after the wash so you can rewash any problem items.
