At Art Taipei 2025 (Oct. 24–27), 15 Korean galleries participated, but several small, independent Seoul galleries made notable impressions despite not belonging to the Galleries Association of Korea or showing at major domestic fairs. L Gallery — which closed its physical Seoul space but maintains a strong presence across Asia — has built a client base in Taiwan and beyond, selling out works like Kim Kwan-young’s “The Memory of the Unconscious.” M Contemporary returned after debuting last year, finding repeat Taiwanese buyers for artists such as Fool (who makes his own pigments) and showing works on hanji (traditional Korean paper). First-time exhibitor Wolha Art praised Taiwan’s discerning market and presented focused booths by artists like Park Byung-hoon and Lee Myung-soon. Collectively, these galleries show how smaller Korean players are using international fairs to gain visibility, cultivate collectors, and sometimes achieve greater success overseas than at home.
