Gangwon Provincial Dance Company and the Chuncheon International High Music Festival present two interpretations of the Orpheus myth in Chuncheon. The provincial troupe stages 'Orpheus' on the 31st, a work revisited with Korean dance and traditional elements (e.g., ssitgimgut — a Korean purification ritual) that transforms the Greek tale into a local, emotional journey between life and death. The dance drew audience immersion last year with ensemble choreography and theatrical expression. On the 2nd, the festival presents Gluck's opera 'Orfeo ed Euridice' at Hallym University’s Ilsong Art Hall, a landmark classical piece that favors natural musical-dramatic expression over ornate Baroque style. Performed by Collegium Musicum Seoul under conductor Kwon Seong-jun, the cast includes countertenor Jipil-doo as Orfeo and soprano Lee Hyo-jin as Euridice, with ballet and choir contributions. Both productions focus on dramatic emotion rather than virtuosic display, offering fresh, culturally infused views of a timeless myth.
