The first "Millennium Tree Fruit Festival" will be held Dec. 1 at Jeongnamjin Arboretum in Jangheung, South Jeolla Province. Co-hosted by the provincial government and Jangheung County, the event—titled "A millennium forest, carried on by fruits"—is a hands-on, family-friendly celebration of ecological coexistence. Visitors can collect fruits from many native trees such as quince (mogwa), zelkova (nut-like tree), Japanese cypress (cheonbaek), hwangchil (a lacquer tree), Korean nut pine (gusiljatbamnamu), kkulgeori (gulgeori tree), and camellia (dongbaek). Main programs include harvesting ripe seeds, roasting Korean nut pine seeds to eat, making potted “companion trees” from gathered seeds, and trying to plant a millennium tree at home. Seedlings of camellia, Korean nut pine, and gulgeori will be given free to participants to encourage planting at home. Organizers hope the festival will foster nature education, ecological tourism, and sustained community engagement with the arboretum.
