The Myeongjusa Museum of Korean Woodblock Prints will exhibit over 70 antique East Asian prints at Tsinghua University’s art gallery in Beijing from November 3 to December 1. The show, co-hosted with Tsinghua’s visual design department and research institutes, brings together Korean folk prints, Chinese nianhua (New Year prints), Japanese ukiyo-e (woodblock prints), and Vietnamese huongchong prints. Highlighted works include a popular magpie-and-tiger image (famous in recent Netflix animation) and a series of Five Hundred Arhats (Obaek Nahan) woodcuts. Museum director Han Sun-hak will give a special lecture on November 6 for students and print specialists, aiming to introduce the cultural value of eastern woodblock prints to future design professionals. The Myeongjusa museum, founded in 2003, holds some 6,000 historic woodblocks and related artifacts.
