Tongyeong Bridge Reimagined as Sea-Side Artwork Featuring Jeon Hyeok-rim’s 'Fishermen’s Ritual'Creatrip Team
a month ago
Tongyeong City completed a renovation of Tongyeong Bridge connecting the city to Mireukdo, reinforcing safety and transforming the bridge into a public art landmark. The city spent 4 billion won since March to remove old blue paint, treat corrosion, and repaint the arches with the colors and abstract motifs of local artist Jeon Hyeok-rim’s (전혁림) work 'Pungeoje' (Fishermen’s Ritual). Jeon, a celebrated Tongyeong-born modern painter often called 'Korea’s Picasso,' depicted fishermen, families and the bountiful sea using bold primary colors to evoke the region’s islands and seafood. His family and the Jeon Hyeok-rim Museum advised on the project without charging copyright fees. The 591 m bridge, noted for its combined plate-girder and arch design and scenic views, is now promoted as an "open urban art gallery" and a renewed city landmark with improved night lighting.
