Tongyeong Bridge, which connects downtown Tongyeong and Mireukdo Island in South Gyeongsang Province, has been transformed into a “sea-borne artwork.” The city spent 4 billion won since March to reinforce the bridge—opened in 1998—against sea wind and salt damage, and painted a new rendition of local artist Jeon Hyuk-rim’s work “Pungeoje” (a fishing harvest ritual painting) on the bridge’s arch. The project aims to both preserve safety and celebrate Tongyeong’s cultural heritage.
