Due to climate change and labor shortages, there's increasing interest in low-labor, high-productivity crops like darae (hardy kiwi), which is easy to manage as it doesn't require much pruning or pest management. The National Institute of Forest Science in Korea held a seminar to discuss expanding the darae market and introduce new cultivars. Native to Korea, China, and Japan, darae is a small, sweet fruit similar to kiwi but smaller. It's traditionally consumed fresh, in alcohol, or as a herbal remedy. Despite requiring little labor and being robust to climate variances, it provides high income for aging rural populations. Recent efforts include products like the 'Darae Ade,' a beverage enriched with vitamin C. Growing interest in this native fruit stems from its minimal labor needs and high nutritional value, making it a potential high-income crop in regions facing agricultural labor shortages.
