Jack DeJohnette, the celebrated jazz drummer best known for his decades-long role in the Keith Jarrett Trio, died on April 26 in Kingston, New York at age 83. Born in Chicago in 1942, DeJohnette first gained attention in the 1960s as a member of Charles Lloyd’s quartet alongside pianist Keith Jarrett and later joined Miles Davis’s band in 1969. In 1983 he co-founded the Keith Jarrett Trio with Jarrett and bassist Gary Peacock, earning global acclaim and the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts’ “Jazz Master” honor in 2012.
