Calm Beauty of Yeongam: Autumn Peace on Mt. Wolchul and BeyondCreatrip Team
a month ago
Yeongam, a quiet county in South Jeolla Province, offers a tranquil autumn retreat with dramatic rock peaks, historic temples, traditional villages and local crafts. Mt. Wolchul (Wolchulsan) rises to 809m with stacked rock formations and features Korea’s highest “cloud bridge” at 605m, offering sea-of-clouds views without needing to summit. Dogapsa Temple, founded by the geomancer Doseon, showcases the national treasure Hae-talmun gate and a peaceful main hall framed by the mountain. Nearby Gurim Village preserves traditional hanok, stone walls and the 450-year-old village cooperative, with seasonal red lilies in October. Culture lovers can visit the Ha Jeong-ung Art Museum for Korean-themed modern art and drive to the Deokjin tea fields for iconic green tea terraces. Local crafts include 300-year-old bamboo combs from Mangho-ri made by master artisans, and the Ye-dam-eun natural-dye studio where visitors can dye scarves and taste the “Wolchul Soban” local meal. Yeongam’s food scene highlights fig-based drinks from the three-generation brewery Dogatjip, specialty buckwheat noodles, handmade tofu, and fresh Hanwoo beef dishes. A small design shop, “Always Spring,” sells regional scented candles and goods inspired by Wolchul’s Buddhist rock carving (Ma-ae Yeorae Jwasang). The area is well suited for slow strolls, craft workshops, nature photography and tasting local specialties—ideal for travelers seeking subdued, traditional Korean charm.
