Former MBC announcer Baek Ji-yeon shared on her YouTube channel that she was rushed to the emergency room after inhaling toxic fumes. She had boiled kitchen scissors (to sterilize them) after preparing chicken, and fell asleep while they were boiling; the plastic handles melted and produced a strong chemical smell. Waking up gasping, she experienced chest tightness, severe coughing and headaches, and a doctor friend urged her to seek hospital care. Lying in the ER, she felt regret and fear about possible lung damage, but was comforted when the doctor reassured her that many people experience similar incidents. The report also explains that smoke from fires often contains poisonous gases like carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen chloride, which can cause asphyxiation and delayed inhalation injuries; emergency steps include moving the person to fresh air, providing respirations if needed, and rapidly transporting them to hospital.
