Chuncheon City Symphony Orchestra, Gangwon Province’s first public symphony, celebrated its 40th anniversary with a commemorative concert at Chuncheon Culture & Arts Center. Founded in 1985 to enrich the region’s cultural life ahead of national sports events, the orchestra was led for 17 years by founding conductor Lee Han-don (이한돈). The anniversary program featured current chief conductor Song Yu-jin (송유진) opening with Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, polished performances under concertmaster violinist Park Min-ji, and a nostalgic set led by Lee including Rossini’s Overture to The Thief of Bagdad, Bizet’s Carmen Suite, and encore “Brindisi.” Soloists Min Eun-hong (soprano) and Oh Dong-gyu (baritone) performed popular arias such as “Nostalgia” and “O Sole Mio.” In remarks, Lee reflected on the orchestra’s role in bringing musical richness to the scenic but once culturally underserved Gangwon region, and the organization honored several longtime contributors at a post-concert reception.
