K-Culture Shines at APEC in Gyeongju: Traditions Meet Modern ArtCreatrip Team
a month ago
Gyeongju, the ancient capital, transforms into a major cultural stage for the APEC leaders' meeting (Oct 31–Nov 1). Museums and performance venues present programs blending traditional and contemporary Korean arts for visiting delegations and the public. At Solgeo Museum, the “Silla Fragrance” exhibition reinterprets Silla-era aesthetics through contemporary works including ink painting and Buddhist art. Wooyang Museum showcases Nam June Paik’s 1990s pieces, including restored works from the “My Faust” series, exploring technology, art, and humanity. The National Jeongdong Theater troupe stages “Dansim,” a modern LED-visual retelling of the classic folktale “Simcheong” (심청). A large-scale traditional music project, “Seorabeol Pungnyu,” features 700 performers conveying Silla’s spirit. Archaeological sites and special exhibitions highlight Silla gold crown culture: the Hwangnam-dong tomb finds (including armor and skeletal remains) are on display, a reconstruction experiment of the Jjoksaem tomb (쪽샘 44호분) is open for observation with multilingual guides, and the National Gyeongju Museum reunites six Silla gold crowns in a landmark exhibition. Cheomseongdae observatory is illuminated with projection-mapped media art, and the Guhwang-dong site is open nightly as a “garden of light” through APEC’s end. (Simcheong: a classical Korean folktale about filial piety; Cheomseongdae: an ancient astronomical observatory.)
