Korea Launches Special Inspection of Imported Seafood Origin LabelsCreatrip Team
a month ago
South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries will carry out a special inspection of origin labeling on imported seafood from Oct 27 to Nov 14. Inspectors will focus on items with frequent violations—squid, long-arm octopus (nakji), and pollock (myeongtae)—and seasonal seafood like live scallops, live red seabream (chamdom), and yellowtail. Eel (listed under CITES) and clams with high proportions from China will also be checked. Targets include seafood manufacturers, distributors, retailers, restaurants, and delivery app sellers; inspections will be conducted by joint public–private teams including the National Fishery Products Quality Management Service and citizen monitors. False origin labels can lead to up to seven years in prison or fines up to 100 million KRW, while failure to label may incur administrative fines up to 10 million KRW. The ministry says accurate origin labeling is essential for fair and safe seafood distribution.
