Discovering Geumso Village in Andong: Handwoven Hemp, Local Flavors and Traditional SojuCreatrip Team
a month ago
Geumso Village in Imha-myeon, Andong, has become a highlight of the new K-Gastronomy Belt, offering visitors a blend of traditional crafts, local cuisine and heritage spirits. At 215-year-old Geumgokjae (a hanok residence), master artisans demonstrate how Andongpo (traditional coarse hemp fabric) is made from hemp stalks—an intricate process involving steaming, drying and hand-twisting fibers—while locals sing plaintive ‘bettlega’ (weaving songs) that recall the hard lives of women who wove hemp by hand. Strolling the village’s stone walls, streams and hemp fields gives a timeless rural atmosphere. Nearby experiences include tasting Andong’s famous dishes—Andong jjimdak (braised chicken), Andong guksi (noodles), and local soju (traditional distilled liquor)—and walking the 1.1 km Seonseong Floating Walkway for lakeside views. A new premium 1-night K-Gastronomy tour, “Andong The Dining,” bundles train travel, meals, tastings and workshops with famed soju masters where visitors can learn cocktail-making with Andong soju and make steamed rice for traditional brewing. The program highlights local crafts, food, nature and heritage for a full cultural and culinary experience.
