Seoul City Ballet brings together three generations of Korean ballet talent—choreographer Huh Yong-soon, mentor Kim Ji-young, and dancer Kang Hyo-jung—for a double bill program running Oct 30–Nov 2 at Sejong M Theatre. The program pairs Dutch master Hans van Manen’s Kammerballett with Huh’s contemporary piece Under The Trees' Voices (inspired by Italian composer Ezio Bosso), marking the domestic premiere of Huh’s work after its German debut. Huh, part of Korea’s first wave of overseas-trained dancers, choreographed the piece and adapted it to highlight Seoul City Ballet’s dancers. Kim, representing the second generation and now a teacher, serves as stager (rehearsal director) for van Manen’s Kammerballett—an important instance of a Korean dancer guiding an internationally licensed work at home. Third-generation star Kang makes her first domestic contemporary ballet appearance in Huh’s piece, playing a role inspired by Italian performer Alba Parietti; she has extensive European contemporary experience though Korean audiences have mostly seen her in classical repertory. The production showcases Korea’s global ballet presence and offers career-path examples—from performer to choreographer and mentor—across three generations.
