Authorities in Gimcheon, South Korea discovered suspected midge larvae (깔따구) during routine checks at the Hwanggeum water treatment plant ahead of the Gimbap Festival opening. After additional samples from storage and supply lines found another larva, samples were sent to the National Institute of Biological Resources for detailed analysis. The city launched an emergency probe, tightened plant hygiene measures, increased backwashing and chlorine disinfection, and stepped up monitoring. Mayor Bae Nak-ho announced all festival cooking will use bottled water and 300,000 bottles have been provided for attendees; the city mandated bottled water use for all local events until the situation is resolved.
