Kyochon Reverses Shrinkflation Changes After BacklashCreatrip Team
a month ago
Kyochon F&B rolled back a controversial September revamp of its boneless chicken (sunsal) after public criticism and pressure from lawmakers and the Blue House. Four previously downsized menu items—reduced to 500g and mixed with tenderloin—will return to their original weights and 100% thigh meat: soy-garlic (ganjang) sunsal, red sunsal, and a soy-red half-and-half will go from 500g back to 700g, while the honey-red half-and-half returns to 600g. The company also reverted from tossing sauce with the meat back to brushing it on, and decided not to sell ten newly introduced flavors. The move followed sharp questioning of CEO Song Jong-hwa at a parliamentary audit and a call from the presidential office to curb “shrinkflation” (reducing product size while keeping price) by coordinating with regulatory agencies. Kyochon said changes will take effect November 20 to minimize franchise disruption and pledged better notice on delivery apps and other channels.
