Jeju Cracks Down on Tourist Overcharging with 3-Step Management SystemCreatrip Team
a month ago
Jeju Province has launched a 3-step plan to restore tourist trust by tackling overcharging (baragaji-yogeum). The program—covering prevention, monitoring, and sanctions—was announced after complaints about inflated prices at festivals and markets (e.g., kimbap at Tamna Cultural Festival, grilled squid at Olle Market, and pork cuts). Before events, authorities will set price-stability measures, run a festival price control center, sign voluntary agreements with vendors, and provide training. During festivals, a complaint center, joint public-private inspection teams, clearer price tags, menu photos, and sample displays at booths will be mandatory. Penalties include score deductions in festival evaluations, exclusion from designated festival status, budget cuts, and a “one-strike-out” policy for serious violations. Repeated offenders face stricter exclusions and funding limits. Officials say the steps aim to prevent unfair practices, strengthen monitoring, and ensure trustworthy tourism in Jeju.
