Heartwarming Laughter: Musicals 'Mrs. Doubtfire' and 'Redbook' Shine This FallCreatrip Team
2 months ago
Two new Korean-stage musicals offer contrasting but moving experiences. Mrs. Doubtfire, adapted from the 1993 Robin Williams film, follows divorced Daniel who disguises himself as a nanny, Mrs. Doubtfire, to stay close to his three children. The production — its Korean run marking a second staging after international success on Broadway and the West End — features quick costume changes (Daniel transforms into Mrs. Doubtfire in about 8 seconds) and comic ad-libs from veteran actors, balancing broad humor with tender family insight. Redbook is an original Korean musical set in conservative 19th-century London about Anna, a spirited writer who challenges social taboos about women, love and sexuality by publishing in a magazine called Redbook. The show mixes witty imagination, warm friendships (including a cross-dressing founder of a women’s literary club) and polished music to tell a timely story of female agency. Both run through Dec. 7 in Seoul: Mrs. Doubtfire at Charlotte Theater (age 8+) and Redbook at Universal Art Center (age 13+).
