A landmark Kim Whanki abstract from 1971, titled 19-VI-71 #206, will be offered at Christie’s New York 20th Century Evening sale on November 17. Estimated at $7.5–10 million (about ₩10.67–14.22 billion), the work marks the first time a Korean painting appears in this prestigious New York evening auction alongside masters like Picasso and Chagall. Painted during Kim’s New York period, the dot-patterned canvas—noted for its radiating points and emerald band—demonstrates the artist’s technical peak and rarity (fewer than 30 works over 200 size from 1971). The 1971 peer work 05-IV-71 #200 (Universe) previously sold in Hong Kong for about ₩15.35 billion, highlighting strong market interest and Kim’s international stature.
