Samyang Food announced it will reintroduce ramen made with beef tallow (uji) next month, marking the first use of uji in their product lineup since the 1989 “uji scandal” that severely damaged the brand’s market share. The new premium item, “Samyang Ramen 1963,” commemorates the year the company first launched ramen in Korea (1963) and aims to cater to current consumer tastes. Although health authorities declared uji-based ramen safe during the 1989 controversy, Samyang switched to palm oil for decades; this release signals a return to traditional ingredients with a modern, premium positioning.
