Lotte Mart announced it will sell domestically farmed salmon from March 23–26, the first Korean retailer to do so. Salmon is valued as a healthy protein and source of omega-3, but South Korea has relied heavily on imports. The new offering is a rare 'king salmon' (왕연어), which takes about 2.5 years to grow and represents only about 1% of global farmed volume. Lotte Mart collaborated with Wolya Fisheries (월야수산), a company farming salmon since 2014 that maintains optimal year-round temperatures below 13°C. Earlier, Lotte Mart also began operating a designated salmon farm in Puerto Montt, Chile, and imports chilled Chilean salmon by air. Lotte Mart says selling Korean salmon aims to reduce import dependence and stabilize supply amid high exchange rates, while providing fresher, higher-quality salmon to customers.
