The National Symphony Orchestra will perform Bruckner’s Symphony No.4 “Romantic” at Seoul Arts Center on the 1st of next month as part of its 259th subscription concert. Conductor Lawrence Renes (Dutch–Maltese), former music director of the Royal Swedish Opera, will lead a program highlighting German‑language repertoire, opening with the overture to Wagner’s opera The Mastersingers of Nuremberg. British trumpeter Matilda Lloyd will make her Korean debut as soloist in Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major (a late work by Haydn often heard in TV programs such as “Scholarship Quiz” and the Netflix series “Squid Game”), showcasing virtuosic brass playing against Haydn’s clear classical structure. The concert culminates with Bruckner’s majestic Symphony No.4, inspired by medieval knightly legends and noted for its cathedral‑like blend of lush strings and triumphant brass. The orchestra says the program spans the golden age of Austrian and German music, offering audiences both Haydn’s classical grace and Bruckner’s grand romanticism.
