Incheon will expand its major performance venue as the Art Center Incheon Phase 2 project conditionally passed the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s central investment review. Conditions include safety checks of existing structures, creating content distinct from nearby facilities, and completing detailed design before the next review. The project—part of a complex that opened in 2018 with a concert hall, opera house and Art & Tech Center—plans two new buildings: a 1,439-seat opera house and an Art & Tech Center with open studios, creative spaces, an experimental theater and education areas. With a total floor area of about 33,175 m² (two basement levels and eight aboveground), the expansion has a target opening year of 2029. The review had previously rejected the plan twice over cost-effectiveness concerns; city officials say they will proceed carefully to make Incheon a global cultural city.
