Sunchang Fermented Sauce Festival Draws Crowds with Royal Gochujang ProcessionCreatrip Team
2 months ago
On the final day of the 20th Sunchang Fermented Sauce Festival in Sunchang, North Jeolla, visitors flocked to the traditional Gochujang Folk Village and Fermentation Theme Park. The festival gained added attention after Korea’s jang (traditional fermented sauces) making culture was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Festival organizers refreshed the program to appeal to younger generations and wider audiences. The highlight was the signature “Sunchang Gochujang Royal Presentation Parade,” led by county head Choi Young-il, featuring a majestic performance by the Okcheon marching band, sword-bearing guards, and ox-carts carrying gochujang (red chili paste) and doenjang (soybean paste). About 200 participants — including locals, foreigners, and visitors — joined the agricultural song troupe in the procession.
