Jeon Min-cheol (21), a South Korean dancer who joined Russia’s world-renowned Mariinsky Ballet, has been officially listed as a First Soloist on the company roster. The Mariinsky rank structure progresses from corps de ballet to coryphée, second soloist, first soloist, and principal; First Soloist is a senior rank just below principal, recognizing strong technique and artistry. Jeon will appear as the male lead Prince Albrecht in Giselle on the 25th. He auditioned for the Mariinsky while studying at Korea National University of Arts, debuted in July as Solor in La Bayadère (initially as a guest artist due to visa delays), and previously gained attention after appearing on the TV show Young Gifted and Talented (MBC ‘Yeongjae Balguldan’). He won top prizes at the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) in both pas de deux and senior male categories.
