South Korean ballet dancer Jeon Min-cheol (21) has officially joined Russia’s prestigious Mariinsky Ballet as a First Soloist after completing his work visa process. Appointed on the company’s website, Jeon becomes the second Korean male dancer in the company following Kim Ki-min. Jeon, who previously performed leading roles such as Albrecht in Giselle and Solor in La Bayadère, had been appearing as a guest artist while his visa was pending. Mariinsky’s ranking system includes corps de ballet, coryphée, second soloist, first soloist, and principal. The company’s director cast Jeon in several roles this year to evaluate his technique and stage presence; his first official performance as a company member will be Giselle on the 25th. Jeon said he feels a “new chapter” has opened and will work to shine in upcoming productions.
