Canada uniquely maintains a strategic reserve for maple syrup, managed by the Quebec Maple Syrup Producers Federation (FPAQ). Quebec supplies about 75% of the world’s maple syrup, and FPAQ stores excess production in large tanks (about 218,000 barrels capacity) to stabilize prices and supply—similar to how governments hold strategic oil reserves. The reserve can release syrup in low-production years or store surplus in high-production years, protecting producers’ income and market stability. The stocks have even been targeted by thieves in a famous 2011 heist and proved crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic when FPAQ released reserves to prevent shortages and price spikes.
