The 6th annual “2025 Joseon Royal Tombs Festival” opened on October 17 at Seolleung in Seoul despite rainy weather. Minister Heo Min of the Cultural Heritage Administration praised the festival as a way to share Korea’s UNESCO-listed royal tombs and K-culture with the world. Running through the 26th, the festival is held at nine Joseon royal tomb sites (왕릉) including Seolleung, Jeongneung, Seooreung, and Donggureung, offering performances, tours, exhibitions, and hands-on experiences under the theme “Joseon Royal Tombs: Viewing 500 Years of Glory.” Highlights include the historical music drama “Seongjong, Planting Light,” guided tomb processions (조선 능행), storytelling walks led by tomb attendants (능참봉), night tours (야별행), and an AR exhibition where visitors can try ritual foods and officials’ costumes. All 40 Joseon royal tombs in Korea are UNESCO World Heritage sites; last year’s festival drew about 50,000 visitors and organizers hope to surpass that this year.
