Namyangju Revitalizes Declining Alleyways with Resident-Led Urban Regeneration ProjectCreatrip Team
2 months ago
Namyangju City in Gyeonggi Province completed the ‘2025 Hwado-eup Urban Regeneration Public Design Project’ held from June to October. As part of the Hwado-eup New Deal urban regeneration initiative, the project focused on resident-participatory public design to improve the local environment and raise community awareness of public space. Through ten sessions in the Haebangchon neighborhood on Maseok-ro 45beon-gil, participants received practical education in topics such as urban regeneration and public design, alley branding planning, case study visits, workshops, and hands-on mural and signboard creation. The murals were organized into three thematic zones—landscape zone (Jajak-sup-gil, a self-planted forest path), memory zone (Chueok-gil, a nostalgia lane), and hope zone (Haebaragi-gil, Sunflower Street)—reflecting local history and culture while conveying a sustainable, community-driven vision for the future. The city emphasized the significance of a resident-led public design model and plans to continue urban regeneration driven by local creativity and participation.
