At the 19th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, no South Korean pianists advanced to the final round. According to the competition website, 11 pianists from seven countries — including three from China, two from the United States, two from Japan, and soloists from Canada, Poland, Malaysia and Georgia — were selected for the finals. Canadian pianist Kevin Chen is among those advancing. Korean brothers Lee Hyuk and Lee Hyo, who both reached the third stage of the competition and had hoped to progress together, did not make the final cut. Held every five years, the Chopin Competition is regarded as one of the world’s top three piano contests (alongside the International Tchaikovsky Competition and the Queen Elizabeth Competition) and this edition featured 84 contestants, including 16 previous top prize winners. The three-day final will take place at the Warsaw Philharmonic Concert Hall on Oct. 18–20 (local time).
