"They Couldn’t Find the Body": Visiting the Yeosu–Suncheon 10.19 Peace ParkCreatrip Team
2 months ago
A visit to Suncheon’s Yeosun 10.19 Peace Park recalls the violent Yeosu–Suncheon (Yeosun) Incident of 1948–49, when soldiers of the Army’s 14th Regiment refused orders to suppress the Jeju 4.3 uprising and armed conflict and reprisals led to many military and civilian deaths. The park in Jogok-dong displays rusted steel panels with poems and photos, a memorial sculpture called “Twisted Muzzle,” and reflective spherical artworks titled “Reflection and Reflection” to honor victims and prompt historical reflection. A taxi driver—whose mother is registered as a victim’s family member—said many families remain elderly and grieving; some never recovered loved ones’ remains and receive small government stipends. Despite a special law for truth-finding and honor restoration, the park’s installations and a girl’s haunting voice etched in steel emphasize unresolved pain and remembrance as the 77th anniversary of the October 19 uprising approaches.
