A civic committee protesting sexual violence in Gwangju’s theatre scene held a press conference outside the Gwangju High Court, calling on the appeals judges to deliver a just verdict. The group praised the first-instance court for accepting the victim’s diary, notes, and medical records as evidence and for recognizing that the victim’s post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was linked to the alleged sexual assaults—an important legal precedent. They urged the appeals court to uphold the lower court’s findings to restore the victim’s dignity, prevent distortion and secondary harm, and set a fair judicial standard for sexual violence cases. The defendant, a theatre company director accused of abusing his power to sexually assault actresses over several years since 2012, was sentenced to three years in prison at trial and has appealed, arguing the victims’ PTSD is unrelated to his actions.
