On February 7, Angel Shuang Le, the director of Art Basel Hong Kong, held a press conference for Korean media, marking a more proactive approach in engaging the press. Le, who became director in 2022, outlined the shifting role of Art Basel Hong Kong as it transitions into its second decade. Initially, the fair focused on introducing Western art to Hong Kong, but now aims to spotlight Asian artists and promote collaboration within the Asian art community. This shift includes a strategy to educate the West on Asian art and strengthen the local art ecosystem. Le expressed a keen interest in engaging with the Korean art scene, emphasizing potential collaborations beyond hosting art fairs. The upcoming Art Basel Hong Kong event will feature 240 galleries from 42 countries, showcasing the fair's global reach while centering Asian art. Le highlights ongoing events like 'SEA Focus' and 'Art Week Tokyo' as potential models for projects in Korea, demonstrating Art Basel's intent to expand influence by nurturing localized art initiatives.
