Ella, a cool highland village at 1,041m in Sri Lanka, is famed for lush tea plantations, misty hills, and dramatic viewpoints like Ella Rock and Little Adam’s Peak. The town blends tranquil nature with lively traveler culture—cafés and restaurants line the main road, attracting many European backpackers. Its iconic Nine Arches Bridge (a 1921 stone-and-cement railway viaduct built during British rule when steel was scarce) offers one of the world’s most beautiful railway scenes; visitors gather to photograph the slow-moving trains crossing the curved arches. Adventure options abound: hiking to Little Adam’s Peak (about a one-hour, family-friendly trek) for sunset panoramas, the 500m Flying Ravana zipline, ATV and skywalk activities, the photogenic Ella Swing (where visitors often rent colorful dresses), and Ravana Falls with a natural pool (caution in rainy season). Near the falls is Ravana Ella Prehistoric Cave, a 20,000-year-old human site reachable by a steep climb and offering sweeping gorge views. Ella mixes relaxation, history, and adrenaline, earning its nickname “the Alps of Sri Lanka.”
